Atmosphere

Environmental contamination. The image takes us back to the Industrial Revolution in Great Britainthe development of iron-making techniques and the increased use of refined coal lead to environmental contamination. Stink in the air is shown by the fume that comes from the chimneys.

Echo in the railway station. The video shows how space affects sound in real life situation. An echo is produced by the reflection of sound wave in an enclosed room.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t figure out how to combine the sound with this animation, so I have to upload both of them separately. The animation is taken from a pond in front of the Vector arena. The feeling of serenity and anxiety come altogether as the animation play over and over again.

Review of Group 13

From the three images, both cities are introduced and explained to us using different techniques. For example, the colourful parts represent The Garden City which is an ideal society where people live in a perfect socio-politico-legal system. The blue sky associated with hope and peace, and the trees reflect nature and sustainability. In contrast, the black and white photos symbolize past and despair, everything come to a halt and shut itself down forever. A number of textures are used on the building facade to create mood and atmosphere, it also emphasise the overload material they`ve used to build the structure.

One of the main ideas of their work is to show the contrast between utopia and dystopia which is not only relates to the short story, but it also represents, even in today's society the fact that we still taking natural resources from Earth without paying it back. Fossil fuel will be exhausted and coal silos will be emptied, just like what happened to The Metropolis in the short story. The city was shut and closed as soon as the petrol and coal have run out; the huge urban population had dwindled rapidly.
